How to Play Clock Solitaire with a Standard Deck

Clock Solitaire is a simple yet engaging card game that offers a fresh take on traditional solitaire formats. Using a standard deck of 52 cards, this game is known for its unique layout and straightforward rules. Unlike other versions, Clock Solitaire does not involve stacking cards by suit or number in descending or ascending order. Instead, the focus is on uncovering all the cards in the correct positions before running out of moves.

To set up Clock Solitaire, shuffle the deck thoroughly and then deal the cards into thirteen separate piles of four cards each. These piles are arranged in a circle to resemble the face of a clock, with a thirteenth pile placed in the center. Each position on the clock corresponds to a card rank. For example, one o’clock represents aces, two o’clock represents twos, and this continues around until twelve o’clock, which represents queens. The center pile stands for the kings.

Once the cards are placed face down in their correct positions, the game begins by drawing the top card from the center pile. You then place that card face up under the pile that corresponds to its rank. For instance, if you draw a seven, you place it under the seven o’clock pile and draw the top card from that pile next. The game continues in this way, always placing the drawn card in the correct clock position and picking up the top card from that new pile.

The objective is to continue this process until all cards are revealed and placed in their respective positions. The game ends either when all cards have been turned face up or when all four kings have been revealed, as kings send you back to the center pile, which only contains four cards.

Clock Solitaire is a great game for sharpening focus and improving memory. It’s easy to set up and does not require keeping track of sequences or suits. Because of its circular layout, it also provides a visually unique way to interact with a deck of cards.

Whether played occasionally or as part of a daily card routine, Clock Solitaire is a rewarding choice for those who enjoy quiet, structured games that encourage attention to detail and orderly thinking. All you need is a flat surface, a standard deck, and a few uninterrupted minutes.
